But it was only in a specific context... and it was definitely not common in the slightest. So I guess I identify more with the people that come from places that don't have magic or demons or... things like that?

Hm, my home might be halfway between your and theirs then? Besides myself, there were only a select few able to use magic, but there certainly daemons, a great number of them.
